The Arts
Music
The John Rennie High School Music Program is performance
based, offering the students experiences in playing music in the
John Rennie theater and in the greater community. There are five
extra-curricular bands annually including three jazz bands and
two concert bands. These bands have been awarded silver and gold
standing at the Music Fest Canada regional competitions in
Montreal and Ottawa.
The classroom curriculum includes ear training, theory, music
appreciation, music composition and improvisation. Students
learn the basics of music through concert band literature and
Jazz music.
The John Rennie music program exposes students to performances
by ensembles such as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the
McGill Jazz Orchestra 1 on school field trips.
In July 2009 the John Rennie Senior Jazz band was invited to
play on the Rio Tinto Alcan stage as part of the Montreal Jazz
Festival. In February 2010 we played a corporate event at the
Queen Elizabeth Hotel. In June 2012, the band performed at a
gala fundraiser for the Montreal Children's Hospital. In May
2013, our band won the Gold award at Music Fest Canada
Nationals.
