ARTS PROGRAM

New Status for Arts Education in the Quebec Educational Program
 

Under the new QEP (Quebec Educational Program), study in the arts is compulsory. This regulation recognizes the important role the arts play in our society as an expression of our cultural identity. Courses in dance, drama, music and visual arts, will provide students with opportunities to create and perform their own material as well as expose them to the significant art of our culture.

The Drama Department is comprised of four members:

Sean Poole, Theatre Manager and recent graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada


Drama Ed (2 credits)

The compulsory course uses the experience of drama (improvisation, role-playing, scene study) to introduce the students to the variety of human experience. By planning and participating in drama experiences, students will have many opportunities to work in groups of various sizes and develop valuable understanding and abilities in decision making and team dynamics. This course aims to increase the self-awareness, confidence, creativity, composure, and versatility in verbal and non-verbal expression of the individual student.

 

Drama Studio Option (4 credits)

Through experiences in playmaking, performance, and stage directing, students will develop performance skills and techniques. Students will learn how to turn their ideas into drama, how to edit and structure scenes, and to analyze and present scenes from different periods of dramatic literature. Students will work with the media of both live theatre and cinema. They will develop an appreciation for theatre and its place in our culture. The course will culminate in a public performance.

 

Actors’ Studio/English/ Ethical and Religious Culture (Sec V only) 14 – 18 credits

Entrance into this class is by audition only. Students from Secondary III, IV, and V engage in mounting two main stage productions with full technical support. Students must commit to 10 extra-curricular hours per week.
